COURSEÂ SYLLABUS: From Concept to Outline
Class 1: Concept & Character Development
- Reviewing students 3 submitted loglines for class.
- Clarifying the core engine of the story (conflict, stakes, and hook)
- Shaping a rough idea into a focused, compelling logline
- Character development: defining the central character and point of view; clarifying what the protagonist wants versus what they need
ASSIGNMENT:Â Main characters deep dive worksheet.
Class 2: The Outline Process
- Reviewing main character deep dives
- Refining point of view and strengthening the relationship between character and story
- Aligning the protagonist’s want with the central conflict
- Overview of the core beats that make up a screenplay
ASSIGNMENT:Â 6 story points.
Class 3: Act I — Setup & Launch
- Reviewing six key story points
- Establishing world, tone, and character
- Inciting incident and the moment of commitment to action
- Setting clear expectations for the story to come
ASSIGNMENT:Â Act l Beats
Class 4: Act II — Escalation & Complications
- Reviewing Act I beats
- Raising stakes and increasing pressure on the protagonist
- Midpoint shifts, reversals, and complications
- Maintaining momentum through the longest act of the story
ASSIGNMENT:Â Act ll Beats
Class 5: Act III — Resolution & Change
- Reviewing Act II beats
- Bringing the story to a meaningful and satisfying conclusion
- Tracking character change and thematic payoff
- Resolving the central dramatic question
ASSIGNMENT:Â Full Beat Sheet (Acts I-III)
Class 6: Full Outline Review & Polish
- Reviewing the full outline as a complete story
- Identifying weak spots, gaps, and redundancies
- Strengthening clarity, momentum, and character arc
- Preparing the outline to move confidently into drafting
